My name is Chris Hutchison and I am the Head Swim Coach as well as a USA Triathlon Level I Triathlon Coach for TS2 Coaching. I have been competing and coaching for over a decade, and I see triathlon as a lifestyle that makes me a better person, husband, father, and friend. Growing up, I played lots of different sports, but didn’t find a passion until I started swimming in middle school. Swimming came natural to me – could be all those summers at the pool – thanks Mom. In middle school, I improved quickly and found myself training with the high school team only after a couple weeks. Once I actually made it to high school, I found success, qualifying for state, breaking a couple of school records, and winning Sectionals in the 200 freestyle my senior year. This success helped me earn a scholarship to swim at IUPUI, a Division I university in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. There, while studying to become a math teacher, I learned quite a bit about elite level training. I was also named team captain my senior year. It was also while in college that I discovered triathlon, and I completed my first sprint triathlon the summer after graduating college. After that, I was hooked. I mostly compete in sprint and Olympic distance races, qualifying for Age Group Nationals every year. Some of my most memorable races have been placing 9th at Age Group Nationals which qualified me for Team USA at the ITU Draft-Legal Sprint Triathlon World Championships, outsprinting a friend for the win at the Mideast Regional Championships at the Olympic distance, winning the Sprint distance race at Club Nationals, and placing 2nd and 3rd in consecutive years at American Triple T, which is a race everybody should check out – it’s a blast of a weekend.
As a coach, I find the science of the human brain and body when it comes to physical training fascinating. This fascination and curiosity keeps me always searching for new research and studies as to the optimal ways to train for each aspect of triathlon. Learning new things as a coach through reading and experience is something I strive to do each and every day. This wealth of knowledge that I have gathered over the span of my athletic career is something that I love to share with others as well. As a high school math teacher, it’s just
a part of who I am.
